The Coast Calls

The Coast Calls

Santa Barbara sits along one of the most breathtaking stretches of coastline in all of California, where the Santa Ynez Mountains tumble down to meet the Pacific. Few sunsets on the California coast rival what Santa Barbara delivers night after night, drawing visitors to the waterfront to watch the sun melt into the horizon in a display that feels almost too beautiful to be real.

Whales, Dolphins and Open Water

A morning on the water near the Channel Islands is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you have returned to shore. Just miles from the harbor, the Santa Barbara Channel teems with marine life year round, but on this particular day the ocean put on a show that seasoned naturalists called exceptional. Gray whales passed on their  migration route, common dolphins surfed the bow in pods of hundreds, and humpbacks breached in the distance.

Pelicans + Piers

Stearns Wharf stretches 1,600 feet into the Santa Barbara Channel, making it the longest wooden pier on the West Coast and one of the city's most beloved landmarks since it was built in 1872. It has survived storms, fires, and a shark attack on its pilings, yet it remains the social and scenic heart of the waterfront. Brown pelicans patrol its railings with an almost regal indifference to the crowds, posing as if they know they belong here, having returned to the California coast in force after nearly disappearing in the 1970s.

Harbor & Channel

The channel beyond it is a protected stretch of water framed by the Channel Islands on the horizon, creating a natural amphitheater that makes every sunset, every whale spout, and every passing pelican feel cinematic. It is the soul of the city, reminding you that the best things about Santa Barbara have everything to do with simply being there.

California's Perfect Coastal Escape

Whether you are scanning the channel for a humpback's blow, watching a pelican hold court on the wharf, or simply standing still as the sun drops below the horizon, it delivers something genuine. Visit Santa Barbara!
